Orlando’s Cultural Movement
The Red Chair Project, Orlando’s cultural movement, raises the
curtain on arts and culture in Central Florida unveiling all the area
has to offer. Aimed to increase participation in the arts community-wide,
the Red Chair Project includes a user-friendly Web site that promotes
all cultural events and classes for over 125 arts and cultural organizations
in the area. At Redchairproject.com, residents can purchase tickets to
events or sign up for a weekly e-mail that promotes special offers to
events. Launching this fall, the Redchairproject.com serves as a one-stop-shop
for all arts and cultural entertainment in Central Florida
In 2003 United Arts revealed audience participation results from an
independent study funded by the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. Nine
out of 10 households do not participate in arts and culture within Lake,
Seminole, Orange and Osceola. Similar metropolitan areas to Central
Florida in other parts of the country averaged between 20-50% participation
rates by comparison. Participation includes everything from attending
an event, volunteering, taking a class or donating to your favorite arts
group.
The Central Florida Performing Arts Alliance manages the project in
conjunction with the Orlando Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau,
United Arts of Central Florida, local advertising firms Knight Images
and Fry Hammond Barr, and interactive solutions company 3C Studios.
Similar campaigns in other parts of the country have inspired the Red
Chair Project. In Philadelphia the project has sold $1 million
worth of tickets since its beginning. Detroit, Indianapolis, Phoenix,
and San Jose have all produced similar campaigns with positive effects
on increasing awareness and participation.
