Decision to Cancel Fundraiser Gala made unanimously by Board and Executive Leadership at Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera Company, and Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
ORLANDO, October 23, 2008 – Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera Company, and Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra have decided to cancel the 2008 Grande Masque Ball. This decision was made yesterday after a Steering Committee meeting in which board and executive leaders of each organization were present. It was felt that a top dollar, black-tie event was not appropriate given the current state of the economy. The Steering Committee believes the decision to cancel Grande Masque for this year is a wise and prudent business decision.
Funds raised from Grande Masque not only help support the groups’ performances during the year, but also support such worthy projects as the Orlando Ballet’s S.T.E.P.S. (Scholarship Training for the Enrichment of Primary Students) program, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s Tiny Tots program, and Orlando Opera Company’s Summer Camps. Individuals wishing to still support these programs and other educational activities are encouraged to make a tax deductible donation to the Grande Masque Scholarship Fund c/o Orlando Opera Company, 1111 North Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32804 or by calling 407-426-1700.
The Ballet, the Opera, and the Philharmonic wish to thank their honorary chairs Mrs. Grace Nelson and Mrs. Kitty Martinez, and our designated honoree, Dr. Rita Bornstein, for their personal involvement of the Grande Masque this year. Additionally, the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center must be thanked for their crucial support in years past and for their encouragement for the future.
Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera Company, and Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra all agree that Grande Masque is a preeminent, major philanthropic and wholly enjoyable community-wide event. The Steering Committee has plans to bring back Grande Masque, with plans to make it the event which celebrates and benefits Orlando’s three major performing arts organizations, even bigger and better.
