(Orlando, FL – January 11, 2008) - The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra invites you and your whole family to come and enjoy the timeless and beloved musical tale of Peter and the Wolf. The concert, part of the Philharmonic's Darden Family Series, takes place on Sunday, February 24 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. Pre-concert activities begin at 2:00 PM. The concert begins at 3:00 PM. The Darden Family Series is sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation. WFTV 9 Family Conection is the Media Sponsor for the Darden Family Series.
The Philharmonic’s pre-concert activities are a great way to introduce children to the instruments of the orchestra. Included in the activities are the popular "Instrument Petting Zoos," where children can try them all and see which instrument they like best. Be sure to step up to the podium at our Conducting Station, where you can conduct the orchestra! Also enjoy a variety of additional educational activities to make your concert experience fun and exciting!
In 1936, the Ukrainian/Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev set out to compose a piece of music to appeal to his own children that would combine the thrilling story of a Russian folk tale with an introduction to the instruments and sounds of the orchestra. Over sixty years later, his composition Peter and the Wolf is still one of the best-known and best-loved selections performed by orchestras all around the world for children and parents of all ages.
Peter and the Wolf introduces young children to the many different sounds of orchestral instruments in a way that is memorable and fun. Narrator Arik Basso joins the orchestra and introduces each character, its instrument and theme at the beginning of the piece. As the story unfolds, the musical themes are transformed and combined to add to the drama and action that is portrayed by the sounds of the orchestra and the voice of the narrator.
Performing with the Philharmonic are the talented musicians of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra (FSYO), who are certain to inspire aspiring musicians. Also featured on the program is Caitlin Pequignot, winner of the FSYO's annual Concerto Competition, performing on violin.
Tickets are $8 for students and $16 for adults, and are available by phone at 407-770-0071, or on line at www.OrlandoPhil.org.
