(Orlando, FL – November 2, 2007) - The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents Splendors of the Baroque, the second concert in this season’s Focus Series. The concert takes place on Monday, December 10 at 7:00 PM in the Margeson Theater in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center.
Conducted and hosted by Maestro Christopher Wilkins, the program features outstanding chamber orchestra repertoire. Maestro Wilkins, enhancing the music with an educational element, peppers the program with discourse about the history and nuances of the composers and their works.
The exuberant music of the Baroque, with its brilliant demonstrations of sound and virtuosity, is highlighted in this program that features an abundant display of dramatic and ornate creations by Baroque masters.
Included on the program are Gabrieli’s Conzona septimi toni, No. 2, and Sonata pian’ e forte, Handel’s Royal Fireworks Music, and Corelli’s beautiful concerto grosso in G minor, op. 6 No. 8, called his “Christmas Concerto,” which was set with passages from St. Luke’s gospel. Also on the program is Boyce’s Symphony No. 5 in D major.
Splendors of the Baroque includes two works that feature Philharmonic musicians as soloists. The first is Couperin’s Pieces en Concert, featuring Philharmonic Principal Bass Michael Hill. Concertmaster Tamas Kocsis is featured on J.S. Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major. This program, filled with high-caliber performances of the wondrous music of the Baroque is sure to be a highlight of the season.
