(Orlando, FL – October 8, 2007) – The Orlando Philharmonic presents the third concert in the 07-08 Phil at Carr Series, Symphonic Sorcery, on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. The Concert Sponsor is AirTran. Artist Sponsors are Dr. and Mrs. Leonard and Seline Dreifus.
Conducted by Maestro Christopher Wilkins, the music in this program exemplifies the idea that music is magical – and has the power to transform our lives. On the program is Dukas’ famous Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which found mass media stardom in the 1940 Walt Disney movie, Fantasia. The program continues with Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. This work launched the Romantic age of music; during this time music turned toward the extremes of experience, where fantasy was more important than the literal, and the music became more passionate. “ The Symphonie Fantastique is a work of amorous obsession; an outpouring of a young man in love,” says Maestro Christopher Wilkins. “For this work, we have expanded the instrumental resources of the orchestra considerably, both in size and in the unusual ways of creating sounds with the instruments to help create the element of fantasy,” he continues.
The program continues with Saint Saëns’s dramatic and playful Piano Concerto, No. 2, op. 22, G minor. Performing the work is thirteen year-old Conrad Tao, already nationally renowned for his artistry. Tao began his formal piano lessons at age 3 and gave his first public piano recital at age 4, and performed a recital at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Orlando, Florida at age 7. At age 8, he made his concerto debut with the Utah Chamber Music Festival Orchestra performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K414. At age 10, Conrad was featured on the national radio program “From the Top” as both pianist and composer, and he was featured again on the first-ever episode of “From the Top” TV show “Live from Carnegie Hall” in September 2006 as violinist, pianist and composer. Conrad’s performance has also been featured on NPR’s “Performance Today.” He has performed with symphonies throughout the United States. As an accomplished composer, his compositions have won national prizes since the age of 7 and have been featured on Chicago WFMT radio’s 50th anniversary program and the national radio program “From the Top.”
“We have been so fortunate to get these young artists at the point in which they are entering into a wider fame,” says Maestro Wilkins. We are very thankful to our Artist Sponsors, Dr. and Mrs. Leonard and Seline Dreifus. Seline has a great knowledge of the field, and is skilled at recognizing emerging talent because of her own musical background and experience.”
