The Orlando Philharmonic Begins a New Season of its Acclaimed Darden Family Series with Rusty in Orchestraville

(Orlando, FL – October 8, 2007) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra proudly announces the first concert in its 07-08 Darden Family Series, titled Rusty in Orchestraville. The program takes place on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. Pre-concert activities begin at 2:00 PM. The concert begins at 3:00 PM. The Darden Family Series is sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation. Media Sponsors for the Darden Family Series are WFTV 9 Family Connection and Orlando Sentinel Communications. The Artist Sponsors for this concert are Dr. and Mrs. Leonard and Seline Dreifus.

The programs in this award-winning series are designed to demystify the world of classical music for children of all ages with concert experiences that are as educational as they are entertaining. This afternoon of musical fun begins at 2:00 PM with a variety of pre-concert interactive activities, including instrument petting zoos and the popular conducting station, where you can step up to the podium to conduct the Orlando Philharmonic! Our favorite clowns will be on hand to paint faces and do some clowning around. The Orlando Rep joins in on the fun bringing us an interactive storyteller, and the Orlando Science Center brings a fun project for children to try. The popular Gift for Music program brings an ensemble of performers to inspire young musicians. Also enjoy backstage tours and see what goes on behind the scenes!

At 3:00, we will gather in the auditorium for a family-friendly concert with a story that is sure to delight, titled Rusty in Orchestraville. Rusty is like a good many other girls and boys. He takes piano lessons and balks at daily practicing. One night Rusty has a dream about an orchestra. In his dream all the instruments in the symphony come to life. He meets the orchestra conductor and is introduced to all the instruments in the orchestra. Rusty makes friends with all the instrument families – woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. At the end, Rusty is introduced to the piano. The piano plays a beautiful selection and Rusty is amazed at how wonderful it sounds. He awakens and rushes to his piano, inspired to make beautiful music.

Children will be inspired by young pianist and composer, Conrad Tao, who plays the part of Rusty. Thirteen-year-old Tao showed his interests in music at a very early age, when he was found playing children’s songs on the piano at about 18 months of age. He started formal piano lessons at age 3 and gave his first public piano recital at age 4, and performed a recital at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Orlando, Florida at age 7. At age 8, he made his concerto debut with the Utah Chamber Music Festival Orchestra performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A major, K 414. At age 10, Conrad was featured on the national radio program “From the Top” as both pianist and composer, and he was featured again on the first ever episode of “From the Top” TV show “Live from Carnegie Hall” in September 2006 as violinist, pianist and composer. As an accomplished composer, his compositions have won national prizes since the age of 7.

Subscriptions to the three-concert Darden Family Series are $21 for children and $42 for adults. Subscriber families receive a fun-filled activity pack to learn more about each concert in the series.
