(Orlando, FL – September 13, 2007) – The Orlando Philharmonic welcomes multi-talented composer and entertainer Marvin Hamlisch to the stage for the second concert in the 2007-08 Phil at Carr Series, titled Marvin Hamlisch: A Night at the Movies. The concert takes place on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. Sponsoring the concert is Massey Services, Inc. The Artist Sponsor is The Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation.
Enjoy music from Casablanca, My Fair Lady, Gone with the Wind, Carousel, Shindler’s List, A Chorus Line, and more! Hamlisch’s lighthearted comic talent is infused throughout this evening of music and laughter.
Marvin Hamlisch has become the preeminent pops artist of our time. He has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammies, three Emmys, a Tony, three Golden Globe awards and the Pulitzer Prize. He is the composer of more than forty motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were, and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third Oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for Sophie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and Run, Bananas and Save the Tiger.
Hamlisch holds the position of Principal Pops Conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra. (This is the first time that anyone has held such a position). He is also the Principal Pops Conductor for the Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphony Orchestras.
He believes in the power of music to bring people together. “Music can make a difference. There is a global nature to music, which has the potential to bring all people together. Music is truly an international language, and I hope to contribute by widening communication as much as I can,” he says.
