Musicians Vote to be Recognized by Union

(Orlando, FL – September 11, 2007) - The Orlando Philharmonic board of directors announced the results of the voting by its musicians, independently conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

By a vote of 56-50, the musicians have decided to be represented by the Central Florida Musicians’ Association, Local 389.

Board President Carol Conner said, “the board of directors recognized the right of its musicians to decide, through an election duly conducted by the National Labor Relations Board, to be represented by a union, and we have protected those rights.  Today, the musicians have spoken and the board of directors respects that voice.”

The outcome of the vote has no impact on the mission and values of the Orlando Philharmonic.   Executive Director David Schillhammer noted that, “the mission of the Orlando Philharmonic is to foster and promote symphonic music through excellence in performance, education and cultural leadership.”   In addition, Schillhammer also said, “the board of directors is committed to ensuring that the Central Florida community continue to benefit from the cultural, educational and economic development that only a resident professional orchestra can provide.   The management, board and volunteers look forward to working with its musicians to ensure the success of the Philharmonic, in perpetuity.
