The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents Things That Fly

(Orlando, FL – December 11, 2006) - The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra invites children and their families to enjoy music that takes flight at the Darden Family Series concert, Things That Fly, on Sunday, January 28 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. The Darden Family Series is sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation. Media Sponsors for the Darden Family Series are WFTV 9 Family Connection and Orlando Sentinel Communications.

In this high-flying program, the Philharmonic has assembled an afternoon of music and activities that demonstrate the power of music and how it can make you feel like you’re flying!  The program begins at 2:00 PM with a host of pre-concert activities guaranteed to make your spirits take flight.  After you’ve seen instruments demonstrated by our musicians, you can try to play them yourself at our instrument petting zoos. At the popular conducting station, you can see what it’s like to lead the musicians and get them to play fast or slow. You’ll also meet flying creatures from the Central Florida Zoo, learn to juggle to the music of Mozart, and even try a variety of bird calls. Try to come as close as you can to the sound of the Cuckoo Bird with your call, just like you will hear in the program that afternoon.

The fun continues at the concert, which begins at 3:00 PM. Here we will learn how composers use music to create the feeling of flying like the birds, floating like the graceful swans, and even swarming like the bees!  See for yourself the dizzying bee’s dance as you watch a video enhanced by the famous piece, Flight of the Bumble Bee. The orchestra will take you on a thrilling roller coaster ride, enhanced with a roller coaster video, where you will experience for yourself how music can make them even more fun! We’ll also experience the feeling of floating with skydivers to the gentle Johann Strauss piece, On the Beautiful Blue Danube.

We’ll blast off on a musical journey into outer space in an exciting piece that takes us to the stars. The sounds of the music and the sights of the images photographed in space are guaranteed to transport you through the universe. Blast Off!, composed by Daniel Dorff, was created especially for an audience of children and families, as its components introduce the orchestra’s instruments to the audience, and show how they work together as a whole.

Meet the man of steel himself - Superman, who takes a break from saving the world to tell us how music helps lift his spirits to help him fly. Hear music that was composed just for him by John Williams.

This program of sights and sounds is sure to make your spirit soar as you enjoy a birds-eye view of our musical world and beyond!

To come and fly with us, phone 407-770-0071 or visit www.orlandophil.org for tickets. Tickets are $8 for students and $16 for adults.

We invite students to enter their drawing of something that flies to become eligible to win tickets to Universal Studios! Send your drawing to:
