Orlando, FL – October 9, 2006 – Join Maestro Christopher Wilkins and the Orlando Philharmonic for a concert performance that honors timeless classics and celebrates the music of today. Classics to Contemporary: Mozart, Dvorak & Jalbert is held on Saturday, November 4, 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. The concert is sponsored by the Grand Bohemian Hotel, Orlando. The Orlando Sentinel is the Title Sponsor for the Phil at Carr Series.
On the program is Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, the operatic masterpiece written in the last year of the composer’s life. Also featured is Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major. Dave Glerum, Music Director of WMFE 90.7 FM Orlando writes of Dvorak in the notes for this program, “For the most part, Dvorak’s music reflected his salubrious nature.” Glerum continues, “With its joie de vivre, warm emotionalism, and pastoral ambiance, the Symphony No. 8 perhaps mirrors best Dvorak’s nature and personality.”
The program takes a contemporary turn with a performance of In Aeternam, written in 2000 by Pierre Jalbert. Jalbert is currently Associate Professor of Composition and Theory at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston. He has received numerous awards for his compositions, including the Rome Prize, the BBC Masterprize, a Guggenheim fellowship, BMI and ASCAP Awards, a Society of Composer's Award, and the Bearns Prize in Composition. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and abroad, including two Carnegie Hall performances of his orchestral works.
In Aeternam was commissioned by the California Symphony and premiered by that orchestra on May 7, 2000. The London Symphony Orchestra and the Budapest Symphony have also performed this acclaimed work.
During the week prior to the concert, students involved in the Orlando Philharmonic’s Young Composer’s Challenge will have the opportunity to work with Jalbert and faculty members from UCF, Rollins and Full Sail Real World Education in workshops and open forums with the young composers. The Young Composer’s Challenge, open to all students in the Southeastern United States ages 13-18, invites budding composers to submit original compositions in one of two categories: full orchestra and chamber ensemble. Winners receive monetary prizes for themselves and their school music programs. For more information on the challenge, phone Sally Carter, Orlando Philharmonic Education Manager at 407-896-6700 x 237.
