“A Tribute to the American Musical Theater & A Salute to the Music of George M. Cohan”
Lake Wales , FL – October 6, 2006 – Historic Bok Sanctuary presents the fifth annual Sunset & Symphony concert Saturday, November 11, 2006, at 6 p.m. Enjoy an enchanting picnic and pops evening of light classics while relaxing with family and friends. The highest point on the Florida peninsula, 298 feet above sea level, offers a dramatic vista to watch the sun disappear below the horizon. The concert offers a memorable experience as conductor Andrew Lane leads the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Sanctuary carillonneur William De Turk performs carillon selections.
Advance tickets for Sunset & Symphony are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 5-12. Tickets purchased the day of the concert will be $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 5-12. Children under 5 are admitted free. Tickets are on sale at Historic Bok Sanctuary, Citizens Bank & Trust, Central Florida Eurocars in Lakeland, Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce, Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra box office.
The event is a highlight of the fall cultural calendar. Concertgoers may enter at 4 p.m. to enjoy the serene beauty of the Olmsted-designed gardens at Historic Bok Sanctuary. A gift from Edward W. Bok and now a National Historic Landmark, the Sanctuary offers an extraordinary setting to hear the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and one of the world’s finest carillons. Flambeaux will illuminate the pathways that lead up to the 205-foot-tall “Singing Tower.”
"The manicured meadow allows for a gradual incline from the stage to the carillon, so the entire audience can see and hear the performance,” says OPO general manager and principal horn Mark Fischer. “Orchestral music can be enjoyed without a concert hall in a beautiful outdoor setting, and this one is ideal."
Guests may bring a picnic or preorder dinner from the Carillon Café. The Café offers a selection of delicious boxed dinners for your enjoyment and convenience. Place your order by November 8 to receive a free 11” x 17” poster featuring the majestic Singing Tower. Preordered dinners are $9.50 plus tax and can be picked up November 11 at the Carillon Café until 5:45 p.m. Call (863) 676-1355 for more information.
From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the “Instrument Petting Zoo” gives children an interactive way to learn about the uniqueness of orchestral instruments. Children also can enjoy the family-friendly features throughout the Sanctuary. Families are encouraged to stop by the Visitor Center upon arrival for more information.
A picnic decorating contest, a crowd favorite, begins at 5 p.m. Winners will be selected for “Most Elegant,” “Most Original, ” “Best Fall Season” and “Most Patriotic” picnic themes. Judging will take place at 5:30 p.m., and winners will be announced during intermission. Decorations may not block the view of others.
For a suggested donation of $5 for three tickets or $10 for 10 tickets, participants can enter a drawing for multiple prize packages that include a Sanctuary membership, a Tower tour as well as an hors d’ oeuvre and moonlight carillon concert party at Pinewood Estate. All proceeds will support Historic Bok Sanctuary, a National Historic Landmark.
Event sponsors are A. Friends’ Foundation Trust; Citizens Bank & Trust; Central Florida Eurocars; Lake Wales Medical Center; MAX 98.3 FM, Peterson & Myers and The Ledger. For more information, call (863) 676-1408, visit www.boksanctuary.org or e-mail info@boksanctuary.org.
