The Orlando Philharmonic Continues its Sounds of Summer with Cello-Bration!

(Orlando, FL – June 26, 2006) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra continues its popular Sounds of Summer Series with a program that celebrates the beautiful sound of the cello.  Titled Cello-Bration!, the program takes place on Thursday, July 20, 7:00 PM at Harry P. Leu Gardens, 1920 N. Forest Avenue, Orlando. The performance takes place in the air-conditioned comfort of the Garden House.

Performing on the program are Orlando Philharmonic Principal Cello Barbara George and cellists Brenda Higgins, Jonathan Stilwell, Maureen May, Norma Huff, Amie Tishkoff, Alexandra Desbruslais, Elizabeth Wright, and pianist Harriet Hope.

Brenda Higgins describes the program as follows:

“In our Sounds of Summer offering on July 20, Cello-Bration!, we have built a program that has classic cello pieces written when the cello was rising in popularity as a solo instrument of the Romantic period, but includes something more contemporary and edgy, as well as pieces that are lighter in character with the rag, the tangos, and the Americana Suite. Eight cellists will perform as trio, quartet, sextet, and octet. The wide tessitura of the cello enables cello ensembles to be one of the most satisfying of the multi/homogenous instrumental groupings. The range of a cello easily spans four and a half octaves and every one of those octaves will be ably represented in Cello-Bration!

The visual impact of eight cellists with their instruments, all of varying and elevated pedigree, is impressive and the personalities of both the instrument and the player are apparent as they play. For each cellist, this concert has been a labor of love choosing, practicing, rehearsing and performing a program that all of us enjoy. We were very excited to have the support of the Orlando Philharmonic in sponsoring a concert of cello ensemble music.

From the opening statement of the Kanon to the ragged rhythms of Agitation Rag, this concert will offer to the audience a wide variety of musical experiences. The drive of contemporary master John Adams is counter balanced by the poignant beauty of David Popper's Requiem for Three Cellos and Piano, and it would be difficult to offer a concert by eight cellos without including Villa-Lobos' famous Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, which stands well on its own without voice. We will perform music dating from the 1700's and continuing to the 20th century, Baroque to Contemporary, Classics to Rock.

July 20 evening at Leu Gardens will be...Cellisimo!

Tickets to Cello-Bration! are presently on sale, and are $30 for adults and $15 for students with valid ID.  To purchase tickets, phone the Philharmonic at 407-770-0071. Tickets are also available at the door on the evening of the performance, subject to availability. Each year, the concerts in this popular series often sell out, so be sure to get your tickets early.
