The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents A Celtic Fantasy

Orlando, FL – February 16, 2006 – Continue your St. Patrick’s Day celebration with the Orlando Philharmonic in a program of all things Celtic at A Celtic Fantasy, held on Saturday, March 18, 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando.  The concert is sponsored by the University of Central Florida.

Maestro Andrew Lane leads the orchestra in a program full of Celtic fun.  From Irish dancers to bagpipes - this concert is sure to delight!

Featured on the program is Philharmonic Principal Flute Aaron Goldman, whose dazzling musicianship is highlighted as he performs some traditional Gaelic love songs on flute.   Goldman shows us that his talent reaches beyond the flute, as he performs on penny whistle in a variety of tunes including Invernia and Riverdance.  Goldman has been Principal Flute of the Orlando Philharmonic since the fall of 2000.  A native of Needham, Massachusetts, he began his musical studies in the New England area, taking music lessons at the New England Conservatory Prep School and the Boston University School of Music.  He continued his education at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree.  He has participated and won prizes in numerous competitions, including first prize in the Richardson Young Artist Competition, second prize in the London Choral Guild International Young Artist Competition, and was a finalist in the William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition.

Celtic lovers will enjoy An Orkney Wedding at Sunrise, a beloved work written by Peter Maxwell Davies, one of the leading composers of our time.   The piece is a picture postcard memory of an actual wedding he attended on Hoy in Orkney.  His musical inspiration comes from the rugged beauty of the land and the blending of Gaelic and Norse culture, and in particular, the poetry of Orcadian poet, George Mackay Brown.

Performing on this piece is Rebecca Morgan, whom you may know as the host and producer of WMFE’s popular Arts Connection.  An accomplished bagpiper, Morgan discovered the bagpipes at a Scottish Highland Festival in 1990, and has been hooked on the instrument ever since.   For many years, she was a member of McGuire's Pipe Band in Pensacola, and competed in band and solo competitions at numerous Highland Games in the Southeast.  After moving to Orlando, Morgan continued playing the pipes, first with the Central Florida Police Pipe Band, and currently with the Rosie O'Grady's Highlanders, the 2005 Grade 5 Florida Champion Supreme Pipe Band.

You won’t want to miss this Celtic celebration. Filled with beautiful music and virtuosic talent, this program will be sure to please!

Tickets to this program are $12 - $55 (Students with valid ID can purchase half price tickets in select areas.). To purchase tickets, phone the Orlando Philharmonic at 407-770-0071, or visit www.orlandophil.org. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster at 407-839-3900.
