Celebrate Mardi Gras with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra

Orlando, FL – February 7, 2006 – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra invites you to Let the Good Times Roll with them on February 18 as they pay tribute to our friends in New Orleans with the sixth concert in the Phil at Carr Series, titled A Mardi Gras Celebration.  A matinee performance is held at 2:00 PM and an evening performance is held at 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando.  The concert sponsor is Massey Services, Inc.

Maestro Andrew Lane leads the Philharmonic in a spirited concert highlighting the music of the Big Easy- including the New Orleans Dixieland and Blues of Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton along with the popular jazz melodies of Porter & Carmichael.  Enjoy the exciting swing sounds of the big band era, featuring music by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.

Jazz ensemble The Side Street Strutters joins the Philharmonic to add to the “Fat Tuesday” fun.  Known for their engaging style and humorous delivery, the Strutters’ unique style, colorful costumes and incorporation of rare musical instruments add a spirited flair to this fun concert experience.  The Strutters are no ordinary Dixieland band.  In their music, old traditional favorites are stunningly reworked into exciting new entities thanks to the individual artistry of each performer and the brilliant arranging skills of NEA/Lila Wallace award recipient, Joey Sellers.

The program is abundant with music that will put audiences in the Mardi Gras spirit.  The Strutters’ Dixieland Melody takes you back to a time when straw hats, arm bands and raccoon coats were the fashion.  This medley of Roaring 20’s hits features singing and dancing.  Basin St.  Blues pays tribute to one of the many famous streets where jazz was first heard, and features a performance on an old style slide trumpet.

Also on the program is Tiger Rag, a high-energy piece that is jam-packed with the humorous, entertaining antics that the Strutters have made their trademark.

Popular jazz favorites will also be featured, including It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing and Stardust.  Featuring four-part harmonies, this piece is a wonderful tribute to famous composer Hoagy Carmichael.  Also enjoy Sing, Sing, Sing, considered by some to be the greatest swing number of all time, and Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White.

Having performed over 500 concerts and school outreach programs in 49 states and 9 countries, The Side Street Strutters are growing in popularity. But one thing is certain: they love this music!

Tickets to this program are $12 - $55 (Students with valid ID can purchase half price tickets in select areas.). To purchase tickets, phone the Orlando Philharmonic at 407-770-0071, or visit www.orlandophil.org. Tickets can also be purchased through Ticketmaster at 407-839-3900.
