(Orlando, FL – October 6, 2005) – The
Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents the third concert
in the Phil at Carr Series, titled Classical
Splendor. The concert is held on
Saturday, November 5, 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing
Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. Classical
Splendor is sponsored by MSCW, Inc. and the Embassy
Suites Hotels Orlando-Downtown. The title sponsor
of the Phil at Carr Series is Orlando Sentinel Communications.
Conducting this performance of great classics is Christopher
Wilkins, who, on September 19, 2005, was
appointed by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s
Board of Directors as Music Director Designate for
the 2005 – 2006 season and Music Director beginning
with the 2006 – 2007 season. He becomes
the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s second
music director, succeeding Hal France.
Wilkins
was for ten seasons Music Director of the San Antonio
Symphony. In recent seasons, he has served as Music
Advisor, and is now Music Director Emeritus. He was
also Music Director of the Colorado Springs Symphony
from 1989-1996, and is now Artistic Advisor to the
Opera Theatre of the Rockies in Colorado Springs. As
a guest conductor, Wilkins has appeared with many of
the nation's leading orchestras, and has twice appeared
with the Orlando Philharmonic, to critical acclaim.
In 1992, Wilkins was winner of the Seaver/NEA Award,
designed to identify exceptionally talented American
conductors in the early stages of major careers.
This
program of classical splendor features the Orlando
Philharmonic performing Stravinsky’s Scherzo
a la russe and Brahms’s Symphony No.
2, op. 73, considered one of the composer’s
most beautiful works.
Pianist Horacio
Gutiérrez joins the Philharmonic
to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.
3, op. 26, one of the most popular concertos
of the twentieth century. David Glerum of WMFE
90.7 FM Orlando writes of the concerto: “Since
its premiere in Chicago in 1921 with the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra under Frederick Stock, with the
composer as soloist, it has remained a favorite in
the repertory and has tested the mettle of many a
pianist since.”
A
native of Havana, Cuba, Gutiérrez appeared at
age 11 as guest soloist with the Havana Symphony. Since
his professional debut in 1970 with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic, he has appeared regularly with renowned
orchestras around the world. Gutiérrez is consistently
praised by critics and audiences alike for the poetic
insight and technical mastery he brings to a diverse
repertoire, and is considered one of today’s
foremost pianists.
