(Orlando, FL – August 18, 2005) – The
Orlando Philharmonic celebrates Opening Night of its
2005 - 2006 Phil at Carr Series on Saturday, October
1, with a program featuring one of classical music’s
most captivating and gifted performers, Sarah Chang.
The concert, titled Opening Night Artistry:
Sarah Chang, is held at 8:30 PM at the
Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston
Street, downtown Orlando. The concert is sponsored
by the Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.
The title sponsor of the Phil at Carr Series is Orlando
Sentinel Communications.
Music
Director Hal France takes the stage with the Philharmonic
to kick off the new season with a program of popular
classics.
The
program begins with Samuel Barber’s Overture
to the School for Scandal. This dazzling and lively
piece captures the feeling of Sheridan's eighteenth-century
satire.
Also
on the program is Mussorgsky’s Pictures at
an Exhibition. This descriptive work
takes us through an art exhibit, with each musical
setting conveying the mood of a different picture.
David Glerum of 90.7 WMFE Orlando writes about the
work in his program notes: “The breadth of Mussorgsky's
musical imagination is amazing, bringing to life images
ranging from playful to eerie to majestic.”
Sarah
Chang performs Dvorak’s Violin Concerto,
op. 53 in A Minor. This challenging, yet
beautiful piece provides a wonderful vehicle for her
to demonstrate her astounding musicianship.
Chang
is known as one of the most remarkable prodigies of
any generation, and has matured into a young artist
whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional
range are unparalleled. She has appeared in the music
capitals of Asia, Europe and the Americas, and has
collaborated with most major orchestras.
This
concert, featuring notable works and exceptional talent,
is the perfect opening to a stellar season of music
for the Orlando Philharmonic. The 2005 - 2006
season marks the final season with Music Director Hal
France, who moves on to embrace new challenges. All
season long, we will celebrate France and the legacy
that he leaves with the Philharmonic.
Executive
Director David Schillhammer remarks on France’s
impact on the orchestra:
“Hal France has been a gift to the Philharmonic
and to the community. During his great tenure,
the orchestral ensemble has blossomed into a strong
musical force. His infectious musicianship
has gained us many friends and supporters, helping
the organization to prosper beyond our expectations.
During Hal's final season, we will honor his many successes
and contributions, culminating in a joyous celebration
of his work.”
The Philharmonic’s Opening Night Celebration
begins with a gala dinner, hosted by the Friends of
the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, who celebrate their
10th anniversary season with this fabulous kick-off
event. This gala dinner is held at Orlando Marriott
Downtown Expo Center in the Lake Highland Room, located
in the East Lobby. Dinner guests will enjoy music,
mingling and wine in the foyer prior to a sumptuous,
seated, three-course dinner in the ballroom. Dinner
guests are invited to an exclusive backstage reception
after the concert. The cost of the dinner event
is $100 per person, and includes the pre-concert opening
night dinner and post-concert reception. (Tickets
