(Orlando,
FL – April 7, 2005) – The Orlando
Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to announce that
Senator Mel Martinez will serve as narrator for a
piece on the orchestra’s Star-Spangled
Springs concert on May 14, 2005 at
the Springs Community in Longwood.
The piece, written by James Beckel, adjunct professor
of trombone and euphonium in the DePauw University
School of Music, is titled Liberty for
All. Composed in 2000 as part of
the Continental Harmony Project, this patriotic work
features readings from great documents and speeches
of America's history in a stirring musical setting
that arouses the patriotic spirit in any American who
listens to it. It incorporates parts of Patrick
Henry's preamble to the Constitution, George Washington's
speech at Valley Forge, John F. Kennedy's inaugural
address, and quotes from several other past presidents
and patriots.
“As one of our nation’s leaders, Senator
Mel Martinez seemed the obvious choice to read these
great words of great Americans. I am pleased
that he can be a part of this patriotic event,” said
Andrew Lane, Philharmonic Principal Pops and Resident
Conductor.
Officially sworn-in on January 4, 2005 as the thirty-third
Senator of the state of Florida, Senator Mel
Martinez made history when he assumed his
role as the first Cuban-American U.S. Senator. Prior
to the Senate, Martinez served President Bush in his
Cabinet as the nation's 12th Housing and Urban Development
Secretary. After serving three years as the HUD Secretary,
Martinez returned to Florida in 2004 to seek the Republican
nomination for the United States Senate. Senator
Martinez was the first popularly elected Republican
to serve as Orange County Chairman, which is the strong-mayor
of one of Florida's largest counties. Elected in 1998
with over 60% of the vote against a popular State Senator,
Martinez quickly earned a reputation as a bold leader,
a tax-cutter, and a champion of law enforcement and
education.
Star-Spangled Springs features
Maestro Andrew Lane and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
in a performance of popular selections along with some
of America’s most beloved patriotic songs. Also
featured on this year’s program are the Liberty
Singers. Hailing from Central Florida, this group consists
of eight professional vocalists, each bringing their
own unique performance skills ranging from opera to
Broadway, from jazz to Gospel. You’re sure to
enjoy their interpretation of the music as they
add their own personal touch to this red, white and
blue all-American event.
Set on a floating stage, the full 55-piece orchestra
performs this 2-hour concert with one intermission. The
orchestra is sponsored by The CED Construction Companies. The
concert is held on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Springs
Community, 400 Woodbridge Road, Longwood. Gates open
at 5:00 PM. The concert begins at 8:00 PM. The
Philharmonic is pleased to continue this annual concert
tradition, which, in the 1980’s, was considered
the most popular concert of the year and a social event
not to miss.
Patrons are invited to bring blankets and picnics
and enjoy a fabulous evening of music with friends
and family. Alcoholic beverages are permitted for patrons
21 and older. Lawn seating is on a first come
first served basis.
