The Orlando Philharmonic’s Darden Family Series Highlights Sporting Activities

(Orlando, FL – March 15, 2005) – The Orlando Philharmonic pays tribute to the Olympics and other sporting activities in the final program in the 2004 - 2005 Darden Family Series, Let the Games Begin!  The concert is held on Sunday, April 17 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando.   Pre-concert activities begin at 2:00 PM and the concert begins at 3:00 PM.  The Darden Family Series is sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation.  Media Sponsors for the Darden Family Series are WFTV 9 Family Connection and Orlando Sentinel Communications.

Enjoy an afternoon of sports-related fun with the Orlando Philharmonic!  Pre-concert activities include a basketball throwing activity, a batting practice baseball activity and mini-golf.  With the help of Philharmonic musicians, you can try your hand at a variety of instruments from the orchestra and take a turn as conductor of the orchestra at the popular conducting station.

Listen to ensemble performances from young people including the Gift for Music Orchestra and the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra (FSYO) Flute Choir.

At 3:00 PM, the concert, Let the Games Begin takes place.  Music from John Williams’ stirring Olympic Fanfare and Bugler’s Dream (familiar to all as the music used to signal the start of the games) highlight the program.  Also on the program is Casey at the Bat, inspired by a famous poem written by Ernest L. Thayer.

Be inspired by the young musicians from the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra as they perform side-by-side with the Philharmonic throughout the performance.

FSYO Concerto Competition winner Sarah Davis performs as cello soloist on Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, op. 85, 4th movement.  Davis is a senior at Winter Park High School.  She has been playing cello since she was seven and has been a member of the FSYO since she was in the sixth grade.

Tickets to Let the Games Begin are presently on sale.  Single tickets are $8 for children and $15 for adults. Seats are assigned as general admission and are filled from front to back as orders are received.  Phone the Philharmonic’s Box Office at 407-770-0071, or visit the Philharmonic’s website at www.orlandophil.org, for your tickets to an exciting afternoon of music and fun!

There is a lot to listen to, see and do at the Philharmonic’s Darden Family Series.  We hope that you will join in the fun as you try some new sporting activities and be inspired by young people at Let the Games Begin!
