Orlando,
FL – March 1, 2005 – The Orlando
Philharmonic Orchestra presents the third program in
the 2004 – 2005 Focus Series, titled Aaron
Copland. The concert is held on Tuesday,
March 22, 2005, 7:00 PM at the Margeson Theater
in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins Street,
Orlando. The Media Sponsor is The Orlando Sentinel.
In this program,
Philharmonic Principal Pops and Resident Conductor Andrew
Lane puts the focus on one of America's most celebrated
composers, Aaron Copland, known for his “American Sound.”
Featured on the program is Appalachian Spring Suite
, which became one of the definitive ballets of
the 20th century. Centering on a young bride to be and
her young farmer - husband, the story of Appalachian
Spring describes the celebration, joy and anticipation
of their new domestic partnership, as well as the strange
and terrible aspects of human fate. The suite features
the original instrumentation from this ballet masterpiece,
written for Martha Graham and her dance company, originally
titled, “Ballet for Martha.”
Also on the
program is Quiet City - an affectionate tribute
to the wakeful nights of inhabitants of a giant metropolis
that never sleeps; and Music for the Theater ,
which represents Copland's attempt to compose “American”
music (“plain music,” said Copland).
Throughout
the concert, Andrew Lane presents discussion about the
composer and many of his works.
Featured
on the program are Philharmonic Principal Trumpet Lyman
Brodie and Principal Oboe Jared Hauser, performing on
English horn.
