Beethoven. His Egmont music
was
written
on

1810
to
accompany
Goethe's
drama
about
a
young
count
named
Egmont. It
was
common
in
the
nineteenth
century
to
write
such "musique
de

far
bigger
challenge,
it
seems,
was
from
a
Hungarian
prince
to
compose
a
mass
in
honor
of
his
wife.
The
result
was Mass,
op.
86,
in
C

Although
it

favor
in
its
day,
audiences
today
find
a
satisfying
unity
in
the
mass
from
the
central Christe
eleison of
the
mass
to
the
joyous
choral
outbursts
in
the Gloria,
from
the
tranquil
and
reverent Sanctus,
in
A

to
the
prayerful Agnus
Dei.
