Holly and his band, the Crickets, influenced generations of musicians (including the Beatles) with their lyrics, songwriting style, and recording studio production techniques. Join us for a feel good blast from the past as the Buddy Holly Rave on Band gives you music the way it was meant to be…with great lyrics and a good dance beat!

Phil at Carr 5 – Musical Masters: Mozart and Beethoven
Saturday, January 28, 2006 8:00 PM

Hal France, Conductor
Stetson Choral Union
Peng Peng Gong, Piano

Beethoven: Egmont Overture
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466
Beethoven: Mass, op. 86, C Major

Chinese born Peng Peng Gong, a 12-year-old piano prodigy, performs Mozart's beautiful Concerto No. 20 in D Minor. He is the winner of the Juilliard School's 2003-2004 Pre-college Mozart Piano Concerto Competition. The Orchestra also performs two pieces by Beethoven. His Egmont music was written on commission in 1810 to accompany Goethe's drama about a young count named Egmont. It was common in the nineteenth century to write such "musique de scene." A far bigger challenge, it seems, was from a Hungarian prince to compose a mass in honor of his wife. The result was Mass, op. 86, in C Major. Although it didn’t find favor in its day, audiences today find a satisfying unity in the mass from the central Christe eleison of the mass to the joyous choral outbursts in the Gloria, from the tranquil and reverent Sanctus, in A Major, to the prayerful Agnus Dei.
