Orlando, FL – December 3, 2004
- Pianist Stewart Goodyear returns to perform with the
Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra for
the fifth concert in the Phil at Carr Series, A Pastoral
Painting, held on Saturday, January 15, 8:00 PM at the
Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street,
Orlando. A Pastoral Painting is sponsored by Miller
Sellen Conner & Walsh. Orlando Sentinel Communications
is the title sponsor of the Phil at Carr Series.
Conducted by Maestro Christopher Wilkins, the concert
is comprised of selections that will refresh your musical
spirit. On the program is Smetena’s lively and
lighthearted The Bartered Bride Overture. Also on the
program is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in F Major,
op. 68 (Pastorale). This symphony speaks of the delights
that Beethoven enjoyed during his holidays and long
walks in the country - the simple joys of countryfolk,
and the beauty and then untamed fury of nature.
Goodyear, who impressed the Philharmonic’s audience
last season with his virtuosic performances of Gershwin’s
I Got Rhythm variations for piano and orchestra and
Concerto in F major for piano, will perform Mozart’s
Concerto for Piano, No. 24 in C Minor, K.491 at the
concert on January 15.
Known for imagination, a graceful, elegant style, and
exquisite technique, twenty-five year old pianist Stewart
Goodyear is an accomplished young artist whose career
is clearly on the rise. Some highlights of his upcoming
schedule include his debut with the Atlanta Symphony,
Phoenix Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, and St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra. Goodyear will also perform with the
Toledo Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony,
and will return to Montreal for performances with the
Orchestra. He will also perform in recital at Symphony
Hall in Chicago.
This past season, Goodyear made his debut with the
Chicago Symphony with Daniel Barenboim, Los Angeles
Philharmonic, at the Hollywood Bowl, with Gerard Schwarz,
and the Pittsburgh Symphony conducted by Pinchas Zukerman.
He made his European debut in Berlin with the Jeunesses
Musicales World Orchestra and made his London debut
with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
In addition to his talents as a pianist, Goodyear is
a composer and frequently performs his own works, including
his solo piano work, Variations on “Eleanor Rigby,”
which premiered at Lincoln Center in New York in August
2000, and his Piano Sonata, both of which receive continual
acclaim by critics and audiences. He has written by
commission for the Toronto Youth Symphony for its 25th
anniversary, as well as for the Santa Fe Chamber Music
Festival.
Christopher Wilkins, who led the Orlando Philharmonic
in last season’s Phil at Carr Series program,
Triple Triumph, is Music Advisor and Music Director
Emeritus of the San Antonio Symphony. An active guest
conductor around the globe, he recently opened the seasons
of the San Antonio Symphony and the Florida Philharmonic;
conducted the symphonies of Columbus, Indianapolis and
Boston; and guest conducted in Venezuela. As Music Director
of the San Antonio Symphony for eleven years, Mr. Wilkins
and the orchestra were honored with five programming
awards from ASCAP, including the first-ever Morton Gould
Award for creative programming. In 1992, he received
the Seaver/NEA Award, which honors exceptionally talented
American conductors in the early stages of their career.
To enhance the enjoyment and understanding of the program,
a pre-concert “Conversation” is held one
hour before the performance, backstage at the Bob Carr
Performing Arts Centre. The conversation is free to
all ticket-holders.
Tickets to A Pastoral Painting are
presently on sale for $12, $25, $35, $45 and $55. (Students
with valid ID receive half price tickets in select areas.)
