Orlando, FL - October 7, 2004 - The
Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra takes a twist on the
ordinary and presents a concert featuring the vibrant
sounds of percussion instruments. The Virtuoso
Percussionist, the third program in the Philharmonic’s
2004-2005 Phil at Carr Series, is held on Saturday,
November 13, 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts
Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando. The Title
Sponsor for the season is Orlando Sentinel Communications.
The Broadcast Sponsor for the Phil at Carr Series is
WKMG Local 6.
Guest conductor David Alan Miller leads the Philharmonic
in a program of music that features percussion instruments
like you’ve never seen them before. Miller has
established a reputation as one of the leading American
conductors of his generation. Frequently in demand as
a guest conductor, he has worked with most of America’s
major orchestras. He has been Music Director of the
Albany Symphony Orchestra since 1992.
Headlining this program is none other than one of the
world’s most exceptional percussionists, Evelyn
Glennie. Considered a pioneer in the classical
music community, Glennie is the first person to successfully
create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist.
This Scottish-born percussion phenomenon has been heralded
throughout the world for her dazzling virtuosity. Melinda
Bargreen of The Seattle Times writes, “When Evelyn
Glennie is on the program, you know you’re in
for not only performance, but performance art....It’s
as fascinating to watch Glennie as it is to hear her.
The diminutive percussionist attacks her arrays of instruments
with a concentration and intensity that are palpable.”
Evelyn Glennie has met with exceptional success in
North America, where she devotes over four months of
her annual schedule to recitals, concerts and master
classes across the United States and Canada. She has
performed with, among others, the orchestras of Baltimore,
Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Montreal,
New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Toronto,
and Washington, D.C. Ms. Glennie also regularly appears
throughout Asia, Europe, and the United Kingdom, where
she is a regular guest at the BBC Proms.
Glennie will perform two renowned works with the Philharmonic;
Masson’s Concerto for Snare Drum and Schwantner’s
Concerto for Percussion, which also spotlights the Philharmonic’s
percussionists. Also on the program are Rimsky-Korsakov’s
Russian Easter Overture and Shostakovich’s Symphony
No. 6 in B Minor, op. 54.
The Virtuoso Percussionist promises
to be a concert experience like none other. This charismatic
and vivacious performer, known as the “first lady”
of solo percussion, is sure to raise perceptions of
a percussion concert to new levels.
