The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Begins the Summer with an Opera Fantasy

Orlando, FL – May 25, 2004 – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra proudly presents the first program in its 2004 Sounds of Summer Series, titled Opera Fantasy, Singers Need Not Apply. The program takes place on Thursday, June 24, 7:00 PM at Harry P. Leu Gardens, 1920 N. Forest Avenue, Orlando, in the air-conditioned comfort of the Garden House.

The program features musicians from the Philharmonic in an instrumental performance of great operatic arias. The program is highlighted by commentary from Robert Swedberg, General Director of Orlando Opera. Musicians featured on the program are Joni Hanze-Bjella, violin; Jared Hauser and Sherwood Hawkins, oboes; Jeanne Heinze and Sara Shaw, clarinets; Diane Bishop and Julie Fox, bassoons; Mark Fischer and Carolyn Blice, French horns; Rosalind beck, harp; Robin Stamper, piano; and the members of Sovereign Brass: Mike Avila and Thomas Macklin, trumpets; Kathleen Gabriel, French horn; Jeffrey Thomas, trombone; Robert Carpenter, tuba; and Mark Goldberg, percussion.

On the program are a variety of beloved operatic works including Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Massenet’s Méditation from Thaïs and Puccini’s Nessun dorma from Turandot, both featuring Sovereign Brass, Puccini’s The Hummingbird Chorus from Madame Butterfly and O mio babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi, Donizetti’s Una furtiva lagrima from Elixir of Love and the Cadenza and Solo from Lucia di Lammermoor. Also on the program are three octets: Mozart’s Madamina, il catalogo e questo from Don Giovanni and Non piu andrai farfallone amoroso from Marriage of Figaro, and the Overture to Rossini’s Barber of Seville.

Subscriptions to the Philharmonic’s five-concert Sounds of Summer Series are presently on sale. Subscriptions are $100 for adults and $50 for students with valid ID. Single tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for students with valid ID. To purchase tickets, phone the Philharmonic at 407-896-6700. Tickets are also available at the door on the evening of the performance, subject to availability. Each year, the concerts in this popular series often sell out, so be sure to get your tickets early.
