- The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra proudly announces
the 2004-2005 season of its acclaimed flagship series,
Phil at Carr. This series highlights the best of classical
and pops repertoire featuring the fabulous Orlando Philharmonic
Orchestra with a host of acclaimed guest artists, along
with the dynamic conducting of Music Director Hal France
and Principal Pops and Resident Conductor Andrew Lane,
culminating in another season of fabulous musical experiences.
This season, the series expands to nine concerts and
features four matinee performances to offer patrons
even more entertainment options. From the splendor of
Beethoven and the majesty of Mahler to the beloved Broadway
music of Richard Rodgers; from virtuoso percussionist
Evelyn Glennie to virtuoso saxophonist Branford Marsalis;
from the song stylings of Michael Andrew and Swingerhead
to the all-American music of Copland, the 2004-2005
Season offers something for everyone. Orlando Sentinel
Communications is the Title Sponsor for the series.
All concerts are held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts
Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando.
To enhance the enjoyment and understanding of each
program, a pre-concert “Conversation” is
held one hour before the performance, backstage at the
Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. These popular conversations
are free to all ticket-holders.
Subscription seating is available in a variety of package
options. Subscribers can choose from a nine-concert,
five-concert pops, five-concert classics, four-concert
matinee, or a three, four, or five-concert “create
your own” subscription. Subscribers receive numerous
benefits, including being among the first to choose
their seats, a significant savings over single ticket
prices, invitations to exclusive events, and receiving
a subscription to the Philharmonic’s newsletter,
Inside the Orlando Philharmonic. Season subscription
packages are presently on sale, and can be purchased
through the Orlando Philharmonic’s Box Office
at 407/896-6700, or on line at the Philharmonic’s
website, www.orlandophil.org. Single tickets are available
at price levels of $12 - $55, and go on sale August
23.

The Orlando Philharmonic’s 2004 – 2005
Phil at Carr Series begins with A Royal Opening, on
Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 8:30 PM. Conducted by
Maestro Hal France, the Philharmonic performs Beethoven’s
Fidelio Overture, op. 72b and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony
No. 4 in F minor, op. 36. Pianist Jon Kimura Parker
joins the Philharmonic to perform Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, op. 73 (Emperor).
Celebrate Opening Night of the 2004 – 2005 Season
with a majestic evening of masterpieces!
The second program of the series, Richard Rodgers Spectacular,
takes place on Saturday, November 6, 2004. A matinee
performance is held at 2:00 PM and an evening performance
is held at 8:00 PM. Conducted by Maestro Hal France,
this performance highlights many of the most beloved
works by this legendary composer, whose hits range from
the silver screens of Hollywood to the bright lights
of Broadway and London. The concert features music from
many of Rodger’s best-known works including The
King and I, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, and Carousel.
Joining the Philharmonic is the Stetson Choral Union,
directed by Duncan Couch. Richard Rodgers Spectacular
is sponsored by The Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic
Orchestra.
Program 3, The Virtuoso Percussionist, features percussionist
Evelyn Glennie and guest conductor David Alan Miller.
This performance is held on Saturday, November 13, 2004
at 8:00 PM. Glennie’s unique ability to combine
her exceptional musical and technical abilities with
a profound appreciation of the visual elements of percussion
has led to performances of such vitality that they are
redefining the concert experience for audiences the
world over. She performs Masson’s Concert for
Snare Drum and Schwantner’s Concerto for Percussion
with the Philharmonic. Also on the program is Shostakovich’s
Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, op. 54.
Program 4, Home for the Holidays, heralds the joy of
the Holiday season with a performance of beloved Holiday
classics. Conducted by Maestro Andrew Lane, the program
features the acclaimed Sovereign Brass and the Orlando
Philharmonic Holiday Choir. The concert is held on Saturday,
November 27, 2004. A matinee performance is held at
2:00 PM and an evening performance is held at 8:00 PM.

The fifth program in the Phil at Carr Series paints
a musical picture of rustic delights, simple pleasures,
and idyllic themes. A Pastoral Painting is held on Saturday,
January 15, 2005 at 8:00 PM. The Philharmonic performs
Smetena’s The Bartered Bride Overture and Beethoven’s
Pastorale Symphony. Pianist Stewart Goodyear joins Maestro
Hal France and the Philharmonic to perform Mozart’s
Piano Concerto no. 24 in C Minor, K. 491.
The sixth program, My Funny Valentine, held on Saturday,
February 5, 2005, is filled with laughter and romance,
just in time for Valentine’s Day. A matinee performance
is held at 2:00 PM and an evening performance is held
at 8:00 PM. Michael Andrew and Swingerhead join Maestro
Andrew Lane and the Philharmonic to perform some of
the most romantic music ever written. Michael Andrew
croons the classics from the Great American Song Book
and adds a few comic surprises. This program promises
to be popular with people of all ages.
The seventh program in the Phil at Carr Series highlights
the music of America. Portrait of a New World takes
place on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 8:00 PM. Maestro
Hal France conducts the Philharmonic in a performance
of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, op. 95
(From the New World) and Moore’s Warm as the Autumn
Light from “Baby Doe.” Baritone Timothy
Noble takes the stage to sing Copland’s Old American
Songs. U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal, Harriet
Elam-Thomas, narrates Copland’s Lincoln Portrait,
taken from the texts of Lincoln’s speeches and
writings.
The eighth program in the Phil at Carr Series is held
on Saturday, March 12, 2005. A Mahler Experience invites
audiences to experience the majesty of Mahler’s
epic Symphony No. 5, presented without intermission.
At 7:00 PM, the audience is invited to a pre-concert
conversation held on stage. Maestro Hal France presents
an insightful look at the composer’s life and
the nuances of his great Symphony no. 5, known as the
“Giant.” The concert begins at 8:00 PM.
This spectacular evening of music and discourse is not
to be missed.
The 2004 – 2005 Phil at Carr Series concludes
with the ninth program, Branford Marsalis – Saxophone
Escapades, presented on Saturday, April 2, 2005. A matinee
performance is held at 2:00 PM and an evening performance
is held at 8:00 PM. Conducted by Maestro Andrew Lane,
this program features Grammy Award-winning Saxophonist
Branford Marsalis as he brings his phenomenal technique
and virtuosity to the Bob Carr auditorium.
